Training Social Skills Digitally

Can people learn soft skills through digital experiences? Though conventional wisdom may indicate otherwise, Enspire Studios has discovered through its experience that digital media can offer powerful soft skills training opportunities.

In this session, Matt Rhoades and Robert Bell from Enspire Studios will discuss the potential of using digital media in training up soft skills, particularly through the use of games and simulations.

Rhoades and Bell will present a variety of digital games and sims -- including a mix of Enspire products and other commercial products -- to give examples of how real-world soft skills can be incorporated into digital experiences. In the process, they will argue for the possibility of not only allowing soft skills-focused interactions in digital training but also in providing an objective basis for learner evaluation and assessment.

About the Speakers

Matt Rhoades has been designing and writing video games for over 15 years, mainly for video game consoles like the Xbox and Playstation as well as the PC. His published titles include games based on the Spider-Man movies -- including fan-favorite Spider-Man 2, on which he served as writer as well as a principle designer -- the Incredible Hulk, and the DC comics stable of superheroes. He also designed and oversaw the quests for Epic Mickey 2 for the Walt Disney Company. He is passionate about making games and strong proponent for the teaching power of games.

Robert Bell is Enspire Studios’ Minister of Games – the instructional design lead in the company's custom game and simulation group. He has worked at Enspire since 2008 and has a decade's worth of experience in education and instructional design. While at Enspire, Robert has worked on serious game and simulation projects for a variety of organizations, including ConAgra Foods, International Disaster Assistance & Relief Training (IDART), Doorways to Dreams (D2D), and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Robert has presented sessions on the subject of serious games and simulations at ASTD: TechKnowledge, Training Magazine Conference & Expo, and Serious Play Conference, among others.
