The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves
Author: Matt Ridley

Life is getting better, and it is getting better at an accelerating rate. All across the globe, food availability, income, and life span are up. Disease, child mortality, and violence are down.

Although the world is far from perfect, necessities and luxuries alike are getting cheaper. Population growth is slowing. The Internet, the mobile phone, and genetics are enriching people's lives like never before. The pessimists who dominate public discourse insist that we will soon reach a turning point and things will start to get worse. But they have been saying that for 200 years.

Matt Ridley sets the record straight so you can understand why things are truly getting better, and why they will continue to get better. He is the author of Genome and other books on evolution, genetics, and society that have sold more than 800,000 copies, been translated into 27 languages, and won several awards.

This book will arm you with the facts that will help you to avoid the pessimism all around you so that you can anticipate - and participate in - the prosperity of the 21st century.

About the Cliff Notes SIG:

This group is designed to give busy professionals exposure to best-selling books in the areas of business, learning, development, and related topics.

We start each session by listening to the audio Business Book Summary (with transcript) from AudioTech, and then finish with a participatory group discussion.

Please note:
  • Advance registration is required (see link on left) to ensure there are enough transcripts for everyone. You can also register by emailing the SIG Leader
  • Bring note-taking supplies. Transcripts will be available but collected back to preserve copyright. (If you wish, you can also order your own copy of the transcript or audio of the book summary from the Audiotech Store.)
  • It is not necessary to read the book before attending the meeting.
  • Networking begins at 6:45 pm, and the audio review begins at 7 pm. Food and drink are allowed.
